The ACC  village was  conceived to be a zero carbon lifestyle village in Bellary , Karnataka housing its workers from the Kudatini Cement Plant. The main design strategy was to include a passive thermal comfort solution by integrated site conditions and building design as well as the onsite symbiosis of waste management and food production.  The resources on site are all treated with utmost care to form a closed loop system. The proposed scheme saw the ‘residual ‘area  of the existing sunflower field afforested, reducing both the heat island effect and the dust. The plantation would also prevent rain water runoff and the erosion that follows it. In this way the land management would improve the micro climate surrounding the cluster of housing planned for the cement plant staff.  The cooling system takes advantage of the large diurnal range in the region. It allows the passage of cool air through hollow walls, adjoining all habitable spaces  to provide cooling during the day, without the use of air conditioning. The location of windows and planning of habitable space and courts are strategic to minimising the need for air-conditioning, for a minimal cost. All ‘waste wood’ from the forested area would be used to fuel a biomass generator to convert the energy into electricity.
