ABLA has always been concerned about high urban density and motor transport increasing the energy demands of the city, resulting in higher levels of carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere. Pursuing an endeavor to make a difference to such increasingly vulnerable conditions, the team at ABLA undertook research on the ‘Scoping study for policy initiatives to minimize Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect for low carbon urban growth’ in association with Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation. In a meeting conducted on September 2nd 2014, there were dialogues shared between the various invited members and the presenting scholars about the status of  research on UHI presently in the world and India, also discussing the scope for further study on the same. With an objective to discuss the importance of Urban Heat Island and its impacts on the urban environment, the presentation brought forth findings of the research team of ABLA regarding the subject. A final report with inferences from the study has been prepared, which elucidates that in addition to the zeitgeist studies on UHI there is a necessity for an empirical model to study the specific impacts of UHI on Indian cities as well as the importance of locating the appropriate level and synergies for the policy intervention to mitigate the effects of UHI.
